Large entry confirmed for Belgian Open

The stage is set for the second stop on this season’s Euro 1-Wall Tour, the Belgian Open, which takes place in Huissignies next weekend.

England’s Luke Thomson, who won the Open Singles and paired with Dan Grant to win the Open Doubles at the recent Spanish Open in Valencia, will be hoping to pick up his second win of the season but the lefty will face stern opposition in the 16-man Open Singles field.

Irish number one Conor McElduff makes his first appearance on Tour this season and will hope to continue his winning run, having won the Irish Nationals and the All-Ireland Wallball Senior Singles in recent months.

The Men’s Open line-up is as follows:

Group A: Luke Thomson, Roméo Van Neste, Theo Chalimont, Sean Kerr

Group B: Conor McElduff, Sebastien Potiez, Christian Blackaby, Colin Whyte

Group C: Lur Ziarrusta, Dan Grant, Noah Daubechies, Brent Viaene

Group D: Loic Clement, Jurrit Osinga, Matt Shaw, Mikel Beldarrain

Among the star attractions in the singles will be hometown favourite, rising star Loic Clement, the brilliant Basque Lur Ziarrusta, another top local ace lefty Seb Potiez (a doubles specialist) and Irish Nationals finalist Sean Kerr along with several others.

In the Women’s Open, Anastasiya Spiridonov from Israel will attempt to pick up her second victory in succession but, again, the field is stacked with quality players.

The Women’s Open consists of:

Group A: Harmke Siegersma, Aoife McCarthy, Catherine Fosseprez, Maud Pradella

Group B: Anastasiya Spiridonov, Sarah Clément, Caitlin Conway, Mimi Anderson

Group C: Corrie Kroondijk, Éloïse Clément, Cecile Forin, Sabrina Hughes

There are also B, Beginner and Over 40 grades down for decision at the Killshot Club. The Singles takes place on Saturday as usual, with the doubles on Sunday.

Team Kill Shot will be in attendance at the event with gloves, shirts and merchandise for sale.

Kill Shot is the official glove of the Euro 1-Wall Tour and has sponsored 10 of the top players on the Tour this season, including European no 1 Thomson (main pic, with doubles partner Grant).

“The Belgium Open is often the strongest tournament on the circuit, historically attracting some of the best players from all over the world, including Timbo Gonzalez from the USA and Adrian Astorga from Argentina,” stated Euro 1-Wall Director Dan Grant.

“We're looking forward to another high quality event this year and for our elite European players to shine in their Kill Shot gloves and shirts.”

Paul Fitzpatrick from Kill Shot added: “The Spanish Open was one of the best tournaments we have ever attended and it’s clear that the interest levels are rising with every event. The Belgian Open promises to be another spectacular weekend of handball, with elite play and great camaraderie. We’re really looking forward to attending.”

Kill Shot will have a special Belgian shirt (as worn by European no 5 Loic Clement in the photo below) on sale at the event.
