One of the best fields assembled at any handball event in Ireland this year will be in Belfast tomorrow (Saturday) for the Antrim Wallball Slam.

Over 130 players are in the mix, with action serving off at 8.30am and running all day at Edmund Rice College in Glengormley and De La Salle College in Belfast.

Team Kill Shot star Conor McElduff heads the field in a stacked Men’s Open field which also includes top players such as Luke Thomson from England, Basque Lur Ziarrusta Intxaurtza, Armagh’s rising Team Kill Shot young gun Fiachra Ó Dhúill and Tyrone’s Darragh Daly.

Eilise McCrory, Cailíosa Ní Dhúill, Aoife McCarthy, Aisling Reilly and Miren Larrarte Mayoz make up a five-strong Women’s Open which is sure to be fiercely contested.

"This is the third Antrim Slam. It marks a big change from the previous two where we had 55 and 64 players respectively, this year it’s a lot higher which is good news for us and reflects the significant growth there has been within Ulster and Ireland in the last 18 months," stated Tournament Director Dan McVicker.

"We’re blessed to have so much talent in the Men’s and Ladies Open and there will be fierce games in the Men’s B and the other grades.

"What we’re most proud of is introducing the juveniles this year, 13 and Under and 15 and Under boys and girls. Also the evolution of the Mothers and Others.

"Hopefully it will be two really good days of handball, lots of good games and lots of great promotion for our sport."

Tyrone’s Matthew McCartan is top seed in the Men’s B with Derryman Shane Hazlett in as number one seed in the C grade.

The Masters A grade has two groups of four, with David Stanners, John Roche and Padraig Devereux making the long trip from Wexford.

There are also Masters B, Ladies B and Ladies Beginner grades on offer as well as underage divisions.

Games are played on a 21-point, rally-scoring basis up to the finals, which are 25 points. The tournament is sponsored by Cladding Xperts and Colin Gaels GAC.
